PROGRAM OUTLINE

UNIQUE ATTRIBUTES OF PROGRAM

ICU’s IB Teacher Certification Program and IB Advanced Teacher Certification Program are both housed within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The programs offer pre-service and in-service teachers the opportunity to deepen their understanding and knowledge of practical and theoretical aspects of IB education through graduate level courses taught by university faculty and IB World School practitioners. Graduate study at ICU is designed to develop broad and deep scholarship, the ability to conduct research and the ability to fill leadership roles for the realization of peaceful coexistence of humankind in Japan and abroad. Courses are offered in English or Japanese. The program brings together students with diverse linguistic and educational backgrounds, including graduates of IB schools, who will contribute to critical and active dialogue.

Students who complete the ICU IB Teacher Certification Program are eligible to apply for the IB Certificate as below;

・IB certificate in teaching and learning MYP or IB certificate in teaching and learning DP (CTL)
・IB advanced certificate in teaching and learning research (ACTLR)

IB certificate in teaching and learning MYP/ DP (CTL)

Eligible Students:

(1)Undergraduate students including 5-year program Candidates at ICU who fulfill both of the following conditions:
 a. Students who have a GPA of 2.5 or above at the time of registration to the program.
 b. Students who are enrolled in the Teaching Certification Program.

(2)Graduate students at ICU including the 5-year program (M.A. or Ph.D. Program in any field) who fulfill the following conditions:
 a. Students who have (or expect to have by graduation) teaching certification in Japan or the equivalent in another country.
 b. Students who have a GPA of 3.0 or above at the time of registration to the program.


*Non-degree students are not eligible unless they meet one of the two following requirements.
・ICU graduates who meet the specified requirements may participate as non-degree students.

・In-service teachers (full-time) are eligible if they are sent to ICU to study from the school or regional board of education where they are employed. In principle, a recommendation letter is required from the principal or regional board of education where the teacher is employed. A limited number of places are available.

Requirements of the Program:

  1. Complete the required course: Total of 4 courses
    Completion of 4 courses in total (3 required courses and 1 course from the Elective Requirement Courses) from the course list.
  2. Complete a Teaching Practicum at an IB World School

  3. Teaching certification in Japan (or equivalent certification in another country)

IB advanced certificate in teaching and learning research (ACTLR)

Eligible Students:

Applicants must fulfill (a), (b), and (c).
(a) Those who fulfill one of the eligibility conditions of Master’s course regular students
(b) Those who have/are expected to have teaching experience for more than three years in total* as teaching staff in IB World Schools
*The period of leave cannot be included in the total year of experience. However, the period of teaching as parttime teacher can be included in the total year of experience.
(c) Those who have a teaching certificate or an equivalent qualification in Japan or in another country.
*Unlike CTL, students must be selected and accepted for participation in the program when applying to ICU Graduate School.

Requirements of the Program:

  2. Submission of master’s thesis with a research theme related to IB
  3. Conferral of the master's degree
  4. Teaching certification in Japan (or equivalent certification in another country
