Profile
Ludger Lohmann is widely regarded one of the most renowned organ virtuosos and pedagogues of our time. His career as a recitalist, which has taken him to many cathedrals and concert halls all around the world, began with awards at several important international competitions, including the competition of the German Broadcasting Corporations in Munich 1979 and the Grand Prix de Chartres 1982.
He studied organ with W.Stockmeier and harpsichord with H.Ruf at Cologne Musikhochschule. While writing a musicological PhD thesis on "Articulation on Keyboard Instruments of the 16th.-18th. Centuries", he received important artistic stimuli from
A.Heiller in Vienna and M-C.Alain in Paris.
One of his central concerns has always been to interpret musical works according to the stylistic conventions of the times of their origin. His doctoral dissertation on historical performance practice has profoundly impacted organ playing today and remains
standard reading for organists. His novel approach is documented in his numerous CD recordings.
As a pedagogue, he has trained numerous talented organists at Cologne Musikhochule and Stuttgart Musikhochschule over more than 40 years. He has been a guest professor of many master classes and a jury member of many international competitions.
The British Royal College of Organists awarded him their first honors medal. He also won the German "Prize of the European Church Music" in 2023.
