Friends of ICU High School Award

This award is given to a student or group of students of the ICU High School who perform remarkable community or international service outside their academic pursuits.

Award Recipients

AY2017

Third-year student (individual)

The student has maintained a strong interest in international affairs since entering ICU HS and has studied abroad in Paraguay. In addition, the student will be studying abroad in Kenya under the Tobitate! (Leap for Tomorrow) Study Abroad Initiative  led by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Based on these activities, the student wrote an essay and was awarded the highest award (President’s Award)  in the Essay Contest on International Cooperation for Junior and Senior High School Students  2017 (high school division; number of entries: 31,685) sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

 

Second-year students (group)

The group participated in the World Scholar’s Cup, an interdisciplinary academic contest for junior and senior high school students attended by almost 20,000 students from around the world. The group did well in the Regional Round and the Global Round to become the first team from ICU to earn a place in the Tournament of Champions held at Yale University, which is attended by teams that come in the top 20% in the Global Rounds. The group achieved excellent results  in the Tournament of Champions, coming 9th (individual) and 30th (team).

AY2016

Third-year student (individual)

Since April 2016, the student has been involved in public relations activities at For Empowering Women (FEW), which is an NPO that supports women who come from diverse cultural backgrounds and live in Japan. In relation to this, the student was awarded the Excellence Award  (for essays submitted in English) in the 17th Essay Contest for High School Students (AY2016)  organized by Tsuda University  (assignment: write a letter to Emma Watson, who campaigned for gender equality).

AY2015

Chorus (Group)
Received first prize for the first time at the Tokyo preliminary round of the Nationwide Contest of Music sponsored by NHK and participated for the first time in the Tokyo final round. Actively involved in school events such as the exchange with Dresden Choir in October, the Pentecost service, and the Christmas gathering.

Third-year student (female)
Won first place in the free speech division of the final round of the 17th German Speech Contest hosted by Dokkyo University in August. Served as a guide during the exchange with Dresden Choir.

AY2014

Third-year student (female)
Selected as the High School Peace Ambassador Tokyo representative. Visited the United Nations European headquarters in Geneva as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Youth Communicator for a World without Nuclear Weapons and advocated the importance of peace. Participated in The 10,000 High School Students Signatures Campaign to eliminate nuclear weapons after returning to Japan.

Second-year student (female)

Received the highest Prime Minister's Award of the 60th Japan Youth Book Report Contest, hosted by the Japan School Library Association and The Mainichi Newspapers, for a report on the book Now is the Time for Running.

AY2013

First-year student (female)
Placed 2nd in the 14th English essay contest for high school students, hosted by Tsuda College. Also received an award in the 52nd English essay contest for the first year high school students, hosted by the National Federation of Prefectural English Teachers' Organizations.

AY2012

Third-year student (female)
Played central role in planning, publicizing and operating NPO Free the Children Japan's "2012 Former Child Soldier Michel Invitation Project." Promoted interest at ICU HS in issues of child labor and child soldiers. Composed essay on these subjects and won JICA essay contest for junior high school and high school students.

AY2011

Second-year student (male)
Competed in "Chinese Bridge," a worldwide Chinese language contest sponsored by Chinese government as a representative of Japan. Placed second in speech contest and test of knowledge about China conducted in Chinese and of Chinese culture (Chinese tea ceremony). Through this event, deepened ties, with representatives of other countries while introducing Japanese culture and ICU community.

Eco Volunteer Network
Worked with contractor to recycle/reuse school paper and PET bottle caps. Made continuous contributions to raising environmental awareness.

Second-year students (group)
Received top honors in Shizuoka Board of Education's translation contest.

Second-year student (female)
Awarded first prize in German speech contest.

AY2007

Third-year student (male)
Placed 6th in Japan's 63rd National Sports Festival as member of junior hockey team.

Third-year student (female)
Selected to represent Tokyo in archery competitions of two nationwide high school athletics competitions in 2007. Placed second in Kanto area competition in 2007.

AY2005

Third-year student (male)
Represented Japan among 23 countries in Tamkang University in Taiwan for "Physics Young Ambassador's Symposium" (in UN's designated "year of physics"). Presented in English experiment developed with older ICU HS student based on newspapers, vegetable oil, and Japanese umbrellas to illustrate particle structure allowing umbrella holders to stay dry.

AY2004

Dance Team
Placed first for two continuous years in national dance competition for high schools and junior high schools. Won MEXT prize at All Japan Dance Festival Kobe in August 2002 among other awards in recognition of group's creativity.

AY2003

Christian Child Welfare Association
Provided continuous support of foster families since Christian Week in 1991 through student volunteers. Raised money through bake sales to support pair of Philippine orphans and provide optional donations to CCWA. Exchanged letters with Philippine children and checked on their progress. Worked to promote CCWA.

First-year student (female)
Regularly received high awards in skiing/slalom competitions sponsored by Tokyo High School Sports Association. Participated in various winter competitions.

ECO VOLUNTEER NETWORK
Conducted valuable activities, raised awareness of environmental issues at ICU HS and community. Placed containers in classrooms to collect waste paper and raised awareness of importance of separating garbage. Worked tirelessly with strong base of environmental awareness.
