Bequests (Donations via Will)

Making a Bequest

A bequest is a gift made through your will or trust, designating a portion of your estate to a specific person or organization. By naming "International Christian University" as a beneficiary, your legacy will directly support the development of young leaders dedicated to global peace.

To ensure your intentions are carried out smoothly, we kindly ask that you consider a "Specific Bequest*" in the form of “cash”.

Sample Language for Your Will: "I give, devise, and bequeath to International Christian University, located in Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan, the sum of $_______ [or _______% of my estate] to be used for its general charitable purposes."
* ICU primarily accepts “Specific Bequest” of cash to ensure the most efficient and direct impact on our educational programs.

Gifts of Securities and Real Estate

If you are considering an in-kind donation of securities, such as stocks or bonds, please consult with the Advancement Office in advance.
As a general rule, we do not accept direct donations of real estate. We kindly ask that you consider liquidating the property and making a donation in the form of cash.

We recommend consulting with your financial advisor or legal counsel regarding the tax implications of such gifts.

Your inquiry will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
Requesting information does not place you under any obligation.

Giving from the United States: Tax-Deductible Options

For our supporters residing in the United States—including alumni, former faculty, staff and friends of the university—making a direct bequest to a Japanese entity can often involve complex legal and tax considerations.

To ensure your gift is managed efficiently and to maximize your potential tax benefits, we encourage U.S. residents to consider giving through the Japan ICU Foundation (JICUF), based in New York City.

As a U.S. registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, gifts made to JICUF are generally tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. By designating your bequest to ICU through JICUF, you can seamlessly support our mission while benefiting from the U.S. tax system.

Impact of Bequests and Inherited Gifts

Campus Environmental Conservation: In accordance with the donor’s wishes to preserve our natural surroundings, funds have been used for pruning campus trees and cultivating seedlings for woodland restoration.

Service-Learning and Student Aid: A portion of an inherited gift has supported our Service-Learning programs and provided essential living support for international students.

Scholarship Funding: Donations received through bequests serve as a vital source of funding for student scholarships.
