The group of buildings known as Taizansō (registered as Tangible Cultural Property) stand gracefully within a garden of learning.
In 1999, Taizansō on the ICU campus was registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property by the Japanese government. In recognition of its historical significance, we remain dedicated to preserving Taizansō in its excellent condition. Your donations will be used specifically for the continued conservation of this precious cultural asset.
About This Donation
Support the Conservation of Taizansō: A Registered Tangible Cultural Property
Taizansō, located on the ICU campus, is a historic architectural complex consisting of several distinct structures: the Kōfūkyo, Shoin, Machiai, Garage, Storehouse, and Main Gate. In 1999, it was officially registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property of Japan under the name "International Christian University Taizansō."
Recognizing its profound historical value, ICU has been dedicated to preserving Taizansō in its best possible condition. We actively practice a philosophy of "Conservation and Utilization" through various academic and student-led initiatives. These include the "Taizansō Project"—founded by ICU students in 2000 to plan cleaning sessions and to speak for the conservation of Taizansō—as well as practice sessions by the Tea Ceremony Club and research conducted as part of Museology courses.
The continuous maintenance of Taizansō has been made possible by the generous support of many donors. Between 2017 and 2020, we successfully completed large-scale restoration work on the Kōfūkyo Machiai, Main Gate, Storehouse and Garage. To ensure that this cultural legacy is passed down to future generations in excellent condition, ongoing and regular maintenance remains essential. We humbly ask for your continued support to protect this historic site.
Taizansō is open to the public during the ICU Festival and Tokyo Heritage Week. All contributions—including those collected in donation boxes during these public openings—are dedicated exclusively to the conservation and maintenance of Taizansō.
