The whole process can take as long as several months. In regular years, you should expect to receive your CoE around August.

Please note that CoE is NOT a visa. Student visa can only be acquired when you present it at the Japanese Consulate/Embassy BEFORE you come to Japan.
Once you receive the CoE via email, present the certificate to the nearest Japanese Consulate/Embassy. You will usually have the “Student” visa issued in several days.

Those who do not hold Japanese nationality must have or obtain valid residence status in Japan to be admitted to ICU. Even if you complete the required entrance procedure after receiving a notification of acceptance from ICU, if you fail to obtain valid residence status in Japan, you will not be admitted to ICU.
