Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibition was held online
On December 23, 2021, the ICU Service-Learning Center held the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibition online with the Nagasaki Cityand the Nagasaki Foundation for the Promotion of Peace. The event was organized by ICU students who participated in the Nagasaki service-learning.
In the first part, Mr. Yoshiro Yamawaki gave an online lecture. He was 11 years old when he was exposed to the atomic bomb 2 kilometers from the hypocenter and lost his father. He talked about the experience as if it occurred yesterday, appealinging to the tragedy of the atomic bombing. Mr. Yamawaki began learning English after turning 60 and now gives lectures in English since he wishes to convey the experience of the atomic bombing in his own words to people overseas.
In the second part, three ICU students who participated in the Nagasaki service-learning program presented a "virtual exhibition" of photos and materials from the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum collection. The presentation covered three main points: "Overview of the damages in Nagasaki," "Atomic bomb of Nagasaki and Christianity," and "Atomic bomb of Nagasaki and schools in Nagasaki”. An ICU student who preprepared for the event said, "As our generation did not experience the war, we can only imagine what it was like and can never truly feel the pain. That's why I think it's important to keep learning.”
Nagasaki has many affinities with ICU because of its desire for world peace and its deep Christian history. More than 76 years after the war, the A-bomb survivors are getting older and there are fewer opportunities to hear directly from them about their A-bomb experiences.
