Quantitative Skills Support (Q-Support)

A community where students “engage in mutual learning” and “learn how to learn!”

Quantitative Skills Support, also known as Q-Support, is a community designed to support all students, regardless of their background in the arts or sciences, in their learning of mathematics, information science, and statistics.
Our Learning Supporters (LSs) adopt the stance: “Study together. Think together to work out ways to learn.” We provide support to help students acquire the prerequisite knowledge required for General Education and Foundation Courses. By creating an environment where everyone can develop quantitative literacy, we aim to enable each student to choose their major flexibly, without being constrained by an arts or science background.

◆Support Details◆

LSs do not simply give answers to questions or teach how to solve a problem. Rather, they endeavor to foster the student’s “ability to learn” by confirming their understanding of prerequisite knowledge and suggesting study methods that can be applied to other problems.

【Specific Examples of Topics】

  • Mathematics:
    • “I only completed Mathematics I in high school and feel nervous about taking Calculus.”
    • “What do you study in math courses at university?”
    • “Trigonometric functions, finding the maximum of a bivariable function,” etc.
  • Information Science:
    • “I don’t understand the meaning of this program error message.”
    • “I want to understand the concrete image of an algorithm or the process of designing one.”
  • Statistics:
    • “Understanding basics like expected value, variance, and standard deviation.”
    • “I didn’t study math in high school but want to learn the basics of statistics.”
    • “How to create cross-tabulation tables in Excel or interpret data analysis results.”

◆AY2026 Spring Term◆

  • Active Period: Monday, April 13 – Wednesday, June 17
  • Subject Areas: To Be Announced

◆Collaborating Courses◆
We mainly collaborate with the following courses. LSs conduct in-class publicity and receive guidance from instructors on support policies and methods. As stated above, Q-Support is also available for support unrelated to these specific courses.

◆Background of Q-Support◆

Q-Support began as part of the learning support aimed at fostering the “fusion of the arts and sciences” and “cultivating comprehensive knowledge” as mentioned in ICU’s AY2021-2025 Medium-term Plan. After a pilot phase in the Autumn and Winter Terms of AY2023, it was officially established as an ongoing program starting from AY2024.
