Report: AY 2022 FD/SD Seminar on supporting students with disabilities (February 17, 2023)
This is a short report of the AY 2022 FD/SD seminar “Student Support Tailored to the ‘Characteristics’ of the Brain of the Individual: Toward Adequate Support for Students with Developmental Disorders and Mental Health Problems”.
At the Center for Teaching and Learning, we hold an FD Seminar on supporting students with disabilities each year. For AY 2022, we held a seminar on February 17, 2023, titled “Student Support Tailored to the ‘Characteristics’ of the Brain of the Individual: Toward Adequate Support for Students with Developmental Disorders and Mental Health Problems.” The seminar was jointly organized with the Personnel Division. We invited Dr. Mitsuru Yamashina, a professor at the Faculty of Letters at Chuo University, psychiatrist, and clinical psychologist, to give a lecture. The seminar was attended by about 70 faculty and staff members. The concept of neurodiversity, which refers to recognizing, respecting, and accepting the diversity in people’s brain functions, has been attracting attention in recent years. To respect neurodiversity, creating an inclusive environment that can cater to individual differences is needed. The seminar was a valuable and useful opportunity to learn how to support students in light of neurodiversity.
