Report: AY 2023 Spring Term New Faculty Development Program (NFDP; April 4 and 18, 2023)
The New Faculty Development Program (NFDP) is an FD program for new faculty members. The program began in 2017 and is now in its seventh year.
Two sessions were held for six new faculty members who had just joined ICU on April 1, 2023. The sessions took place on April 4 and 18 and were facilitated by Prof. Kei Nasu, who took over as the new CTL Director and FD Director on April 1.
The first NFDP session of the academic year was the Welcome Session, held on April 4. Faculty members who had joined ICU in AY 2022 also attended the session. In a friendly atmosphere, the participants introduced themselves and went on a campus tour. Blessed with wonderful weather, we finished with a group photo at Taizansō, a cultural site on campus which came highly recommended by Prof. Nasu.
During the second week of classes on April 18, the next session, which was titled “ICU Essentials Session,” was held. The goals of this session were twofold: to explain matters essential for managing classes and conducting research in the Spring Term, and to address any questions or concerns that may have arisen in the first couple of weeks of actual teaching at ICU. Despite the limited amount of time available, we were able to cover a lot of ground and achieve our goals.
In the Autumn Term, the NFDP will be welcoming new faculty members joining in September. A full-scale NFDP consisting of more than ten sessions will be delivered, with sessions taking place mainly on Tuesdays 3rd period each week.
