TA Workshop held on August 30, 2022

On August 30, right before the start of the AY 2022 Autumn Term, a TA workshop was held for all TAs.

Following words of welcome from the CTL Director, an experienced TA described the main roles and responsibilities of a TA, and gave advice that would be helpful in particular for newly hired TAs. This was followed by a talk on ICU’s human rights consultation system given by a human rights advisor. The aim of the talk was to enable TAs to gain knowledge on harassment and learn whom to contact for assistance with matters related to harassment.

Since the number of classes taught face-to-face will increase further from the Autumn Term, we also explained the services available at the Help Desk. The Help Desk loans and offers guidance on how to set up classroom equipment and devices, and provides assistance with Moodle, Zoom, printing, etc. Taking advantage of the online format of this workshop, for this part we arranged to broadcast live from the Help Desk. Online working arrangements had been in place for two years, and some experienced TAs had never visited the Help Desk, so the live broadcast was well received by the participants.

As is customary, a breakout session was held at the end of the workshop. We focused on four themes, and each group was assigned an experienced TA or a CTL staff member, who acted as a facilitator. The questions asked and answers given in each group and advice provided by experienced TAs are shared with all TAs on a Moodle page for TAs.

In the latter half of the academic year, we will administer TA Activity Reports, which we facilitate and collect each term, and conduct data analysis. We will continue to share information useful for TA work and act as a point of contact. In the Winter Term, we are planning to hold a TA seminar for faculty.
