Report on AY 2023 Spring Term Brown Bag Lunch & Learn (2023/5/30)

In addition to facilitating the proactive sharing of skills and specialist knowledge among faculty, Brown Bag Lunch & Learn (BBL&L) seeks to enable faculty members to learn from one another’s classroom experiences, including both things that went well and not so well, and meet colleagues from outside their own programs and departments. Furthermore, BBL&L aims to provide opportunities for faculty members to share information with one another as well as with staff members.

BBL&L #25: May 30, 2023

“Students’ Health — ICU Students from the Perspectives of the Health and Physical Education Program”

Facilitator: Kayo Terada-sensei, Health and Physical Education Program

Participants: 4 faculty members; 1 staff member; and from the CTL, the Director, the Associate Director, and 4 staff members who manage BBL&L

The first BBL&L session of the academic year consisted of two parts: a presentation given by Terada-sensei, Health and Physical Education Program, and an exercise activity. First, Terada-sensei introduced various topics related to mental and physical health such as sleep, nutrition, and exercise, which are themes covered in the mandatory course Health Science. In addition, she shared information about the time students spend on studying outside class, sleep, and part-time work, and about their mental and physical state. This attracted many questions and comments from the participants. The session provided a fruitful opportunity for the participants to discuss student support going beyond the confines of their own departments, programs, or divisions. In the second part of the session, using balance balls, resistance bands, etc., the participants tried out some simple, useful ways to feel refreshed which would be suitable not only for managing their own health but also for recommending to students.
