Activity Report on “Registration Advising for New Students” by IBS in April 2025

During the April 2025 orientation period for new students, IBS* held a registration advising session mainly for new students on the first floor of the Othmer Library.
A total of 423 individual consultations were conducted, significantly exceeding the 376 advising sessions held by IBS in the 2024 academic year. The most common topics were related to course selection for the spring term, followed by the Teacher Certification Program, the Service-Learning Program, study abroad, and interest in the World Languages.
During the pre-registration period from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM on April 8, an impromptu “Pre-Registration Assistance Corner” was set up in a corner of the same venue, where APS and IBS staff assisted new students with their pre-registration procedures.
Additionally, as a collaborative initiative between IBS and Quantitative Skills Support (commonly known as Q-Support), Q-Support's Learning Supporters (LS) provided academic advising for natural science majors. A total of 42 consultations were conducted over two and a half days from April 4 to 9. LSs worked with new students to review the “Introduction to the Natural Science Majors Course Planning Guide Booklet” and syllabi, providing guidance on recommended courses for the first year. The most frequently asked questions were about the biology major, followed by environmental studies, information science, physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
IBS is a group of peer advisors (student advisors) composed of students from the second to fourth years. They provide advice from a student perspective on various topics related to course selection, four-year academic planning, study abroad, Teaching Certification Program, and other aspects of life at ICU, targeting undergraduate students.
