The autumn term is already nearing its one-month mark. This is often the time when students start feeling the strain from midterms and daily assignments. Following the success of the mindfulness workshop in May, this session focused on "Walking Meditation"—a practice where participants regulate their emotions by paying attention to external stimuli such as their breath, body movements, wind, smells, sounds, and the sensation of the ground beneath them.
The event was led by Tanaka-san, a LAS staff member and a licensed clinical psychologist. After a brief lecture on mindfulness, participants left the Othmer Library to practice walking meditation while strolling around the campus grounds, which had taken on an autumnal feel.
Walking meditation is a technique that can be done anywhere, anytime, while walking, by directing awareness to the elements: mind, body, and the external world. This helps participants recognize their fatigue and clear mental clutter. Attendees tried the practice in their own way, some in bare feet, others in sandals or sneakers.
【Participants' comments】
"It was helpful to learn a mindfulness technique that can be used daily, making it easy to put into practice."
"I realized how rich my own senses are and how much I usually overlook them."
"The idea that even everyday actions can be similar to meditation if performed with focus and care is something I want to incorporate into my daily life."
"I decided to start practicing this on my way home today. The concept of confronting 'distractions' or 'worldly thoughts' was fascinating."
