AY 2023 TA Workshop (August 31, 2023)

Right before the start of the AY 2023 Autumn Term on August 31, we held a TA workshop. As we did not have an orientation for TAs in the Spring Term, we encouraged all TAs working in the Spring Term and the Autumn Term to attend this workshop.

Following opening remarks by the CTL Director, first, two experienced TAs described the main roles and responsibilities of a TA, and gave advice that would be helpful in particular for newly hired TAs.

Next, as in the seminar for faculty conducted in February, Special Needs Support Services staff explained two items under the theme “TA work and reasonable accommodations and support for students with disabilities.” The first item was about assistance for enrollees with disabilities in practica, labs, and exercises, and the second item was about the handling of personal information of enrollees requesting accommodations.

After this, two experienced TAs presented IT skills and tips useful for TA work. Yoshida-san, an experienced TA whom we invited to give a presentation for us for the first time, talked about how to send individual feedback to students through automated emails using features on Google and about linking Moodle and Google Forms, and also discussed strategies to build a connection with students.

As is customary, a breakout session was held at the end of the workshop. The questions asked and answers given in each group and advice provided by experienced TAs are shared on a website for TAs.
