With the revision of the Act for Eliminating Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities in April 2024, the term "reasonable accommodation" has become widely known. However, many people may not know how we should respond.
At this event, LAS staff briefly explained the concept of reasonable accommodation and then played a prototype of "The Advocation Master," an original card game to experience "constructive dialogue," an interaction to coordinate accommodations. The participants were divided into two roles of a person with visual impairment who has just moved and a city hall employee. Then, they tried to connect the conversation about how to submit the transfer notification by selecting one appropriate script card from among the choices.
If a player feels uncomfortable or finds something off about what the other person says, they can use the “Hmm…? Wait a minute!” card to pause the interaction. They then explain what they found unconvincing or problematic, and ask the other player to choose a different card. The game is successfully completed when both players are able to agree on an appropriate accommodation and each plays a “Got it!” card to show mutual understanding.
After the game, we received a lot of feedback from participants.
In the future, we hope to prepare a version in English or やさしい日本語(Easy Japanese).

【Participant's comments (excerpt)】
"It was interesting that the game style of thinking about mutually acceptable responses for reasonable accommodation!"
"It was interesting to think about what reasonable accommodation means fundamentally.”
“I was able to learn the process and perspective of consensus-building between the staff's position and the position of those who need help with disability through the role-playing game. It was also good to play both roles."
