Calculation exercises, which are difficult to devote ample class time to, were assigned as pre-class learning material, using Cloud Campus, an application for creating online teaching material. The instructor created a video introducing an index and explaining the calculation method and data. Students watched the video before class and submitted their calculations and responded to questions on Moodle.

To further students’ understanding of particular topics, 40-minute and 20-minute online lecture was recorded on video and students were instructed to submit two questions after watching the video as an assignment. Class time was used for in-depth discussion of the topics in the online lectures.

Using Cloud Campus, an application that can record materials and audio online, students created videos outside class hours as a group activity. The videos were then uploaded to Moodle and shared with the GLAA member school DePauw University in the United States.

A “Outline of Course Registration Procedures” video for OYR students was uploaded to the New Student Orientation website, recorded in English using text-to-speech and video capture software. As this video can be used each year, it has helped to reduce the administrative burden.

In order to be able to use class time for discussion, difficult parts of the assigned reading for this course were recorded for students to watch before class. This proved to be useful for students who were not native speakers of English (the language of the lectures) because they could rewind and listen to sections as many times as they needed, and they could follow the text in the video, which helped their reading comprehension.

Students in an Asian Studies class at one of ICU’s overseas partner universities, Kenyon College, shared videos of their PechaKucha presentations. Then ICU students recorded videos of their own presentations on various Japanese themes and shared them with Kenyon College. Students from both universities shared their feedback with each other.
